The following shows a slow motion smoothness test.
The source file was an HDV M2T file shot at 60i & 1/2000 shutter speed. Then, it was processed in three different ways:
a. 60i to 30p via interpolation, and then slowed down 4 times.
b. 60i to 30p via field blending, and then slowed down 4 times.
c. 60i to 60p via bob+weave algorithm, then slowed down 4 times.
The 60p way was the smoothest of all (no surprise here). However, it requires a special processing using a multitude of third party tools, as video editors like Sony Vegas can not do this kind of slow motion on their own. Check my blog for the tutorial on how to achieve this smooth slow motion: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/02/09/butter-smooth-slow-motion/
